Margaret R. Fitzpatrick, 93, of Redwood Falls died peacefully on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2008 from St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Redwood Falls. Visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at a later date. The family requests that memorials be made to the Redwood Falls Public Library.The Nelson-Martin Funeral Service of Redwood Falls is handling the arrangements.

Margaret Ruth Smith Fitzpatrick, the daughter of William G.M. Smith and Rose (Hunter) Smith, was born November 3, 1914 in Redwood Falls. She graduated from Redwood Falls High School in 1932. Margaret attended Stephens College for Women in Columbia, Missouri for two years and then returned to Redwood Falls to work for her father at the Smith Agency. She continued her education at the University of Minnesota from 1936 to 1938, completing a Bachelors of Business Administration.

Margaret worked for the Employers Mutual Fire Insurance Company in Wausau, Wisconsin form 1938 to 1941. It was there that she met her future husband, James Fitzpatrick. They were married in Redwood Falls on February 1, 1941. For six years the couple lived in Milwaukee; they moved to Watertown, Wisconsin in 1949. In 1968, after the death of her husband and a son, Margaret returned to live in Redwood Falls.

Margaret loved her work as children’s librarian at the Redwood Falls Public Library and served as the assistant head librarian until her retirement in 1983. Margaret served 10 years as a Cub Scout Den Mother in Watertown. She was a life member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. She will be remembered for her enduring spirit, and her fondness for family and friends.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband James A. Fitzpatrick in 1965; her son James W. Fitzpatrick, in 1966; her daughter Mary Milne Fitzpatrick in 2005; a sister Gertrude Inglis; and a brother William Smith.
