Melvin Leopold, age 89 of Redwood Falls, died Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2008 at 10:30 am from St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls with burial to follow at Redwood Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 4-8 at the Nelson-Martin Funeral Home in Redwood Falls and will continue at the church on Saturday one hour prior to time of Service. Memorials may be made to the St. John Lutheran School at Redwood Falls or the American Cancer Society. Nelson-Martin Funeral Service of Redwood Falls is handling the arrangements.
Melvin Arthur Leopold, the son of Arthur and Emma (Pape) Leopold, was born December 1, 1918 on the family farm in Charlestown Township, Redwood County, Minnesota. He grew up near Sanborn and attended District 16 Schools. On February 15, 1941 Melvin was united in marriage to Verna Steffen at Sanborn Zion Lutheran Church. They lived and farmed near Sanborn until 1955 when they moved to Paxton Township, where together they farmed until retiring in 1984 and moved into Redwood Falls. For 22 years Melvin sold Pioneer Seed Corn.
Melvin was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls where he served on the church council and various other church committees. He had been supervisor for Paxton Township for many years.
Melvin and Verna wintered in Harlingen, Texas for 20 years. He enjoyed fishing with his children and grandchildren and time spent at their cabin on Lake Osakis.
Melvin died on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls, attaining the age of 89 years, seven months and 29 days.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 67 years, Verna Leopold of Redwood Falls; children Janice Hammerstrom and husband Mick of Fargo and Rodney Leopold and wife Bonnie of Redwood Falls; grandchildren Lori Schoening and husband Paul, Sonja Nyhof and husband Brad, Tharan Leopold and wife Ruth, Karl Hammerstrom and wife Jessica; step-grandchildren Camey Graham, Kim Malecek and husband Greg, Carmen Prodoehl, Colleen Serbus and husband Todd; 9 great grandchildren and 10 step-great grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers Wayne Leopold and wife June of Detroit Lakes and LaMoine Leopold and wife Margurite. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Darrel and a sister Ethel Thram.
