Darrel W. Schweitzer, 55, of Redwood Falls, Minnesota and formerly of the Fargo and Minneapolis areas died Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Sunwood Good Samaritan Care Center in Redwood Falls, after a five year battle with cancer. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The Nelson-Martin Funeral Service of Redwood Falls is in charge of the local arrangements.
Darrel Wayne Schweitzer, the son of Kenneth Edward and Evelyn Sophie (Fossum) Schweitzer, was born January 16, 1953 in Williston, North Dakota. In March 1953, he moved with his family to Carrington, N.D. where he grew up and received his education. Darrel graduated from Carrington High School in 1971 and continued his education at North Dakota State University where he graduated as a Registered Nurse. Following graduation, Darrel worked at St. Luke’s Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.
On April 27, 1973, Darrel married Barb Dunwoodie. In the early 1980s, he moved to the Twin Cities where he further pursued his career as an RN, working in Cardiac ICU, home health, and as a triage nurse. Darrel has been a resident of Redwood Falls for the past year, moving here to be closer to his daughter, Amanda. He loved gardening and taking care of his houseplants.
He is survived by his daughter Amanda Klein; son-in-law AJ Klein; granddaughter Alice Klein; mother Evelyn Schweitzer; brother Karsten Schweitzer; sisters Charlotte (Howard) Nelson, LeaEllen (Harvey) Rutherford, JoNell “Tina” Schweitzer, Lori (Mike) Durant, Kristine (John) Drake, and Terri (Neal) Letcher; and 11 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Schweitzer.
